Newcastle Seminar Wrap Up

Leaders and board members from non-profit organisations in Newcastle and surrounds came together for Better Boards Australasia’s third regional seminar for 2014 to discuss the significant role of non-profits in regional, community and economic development.

The event attracted representatives from organisations across many sectors, including employment services, disability services and women’s services.

In an era of political uncertainty for non-profit organisations, seminar attendees were proactive and eager to express their concerns about the future. The discussion was largely focused upon the new market paradigm and the need for effective strategy to ensure non-profit service providers continue to thrive, despite increasing competition from the private sector.

There was also emphasis on the significant role non-profits play in the development of regional communities.

“How do we revive the community for people? How do we influence the community?” asked Catherine Daley, the chairperson of the panel and the CEO of integratedliving Australia.

Catherine facilitated the discussion with panel members Dr Gaye Hart, Chair of RDA Hunter; Greg Budworth, CEO of Compass Housing; and Michael Murray, former Chair of Hunter Regional Development Organisation and practicing consultant in performance, leadership and strategy.

Other core topics of concern for delegates included remuneration, the continuum of organisations amalgamating and the responsibility of board members to ‘do their homework’ and take responsibility for the organisation moving forward. There was also considerable apprehension regarding the future of funding for non-profit organisations and why risk management is a big challenge facing directors.

The seminar was the first of its kind that Better Boards has run in Newcastle. It was part of Better Boards’ national series on regional, community and economic development strategies.
