Dr Isabella Allan
International Advisory Board Member for the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development, Goa Institute of Management, India
Dr Isabella Allan is an organisational psychologist, former CEO, and Non-Executive Director who helps boards and executive teams make confident decisions in complex, high-stakes environments. She has held C-Suite roles across banking and financial services, telecommunications, professional services, government, manufacturing/mining, health and education, giving her a practical view on how governance, culture and commercial realities collide under pressure.
Dr Isabella's work is evidence-based and tool-driven, translating behavioural science and systems thinking into board-ready decision practices – clarifying decision rights, strengthening strategic oversight and improving risk and performance conversations.
She is the author of three books, including the best selling Turn Talk Into Action and contributes to executive programs and leadership publications internationally. She currently serves as an International Advisory Board Member for the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development at Goa Institute of Management, India, and is Founder at The Complexity Practice
Every NFP has had this moment: Something escalates quickly and people say, ‘We didn’t know’, even though the topic appeared in papers more than once. In a complex environment of funding uncertainty, workforce pressure, community expectations and reputational risk, it is rarely a lack of commitment that causes trouble. More often it is decision avoidance, where meetings feel busy but the real call stays untouched.
This session offers a practical way to govern with courage under complexity, without adding more paperwork. It is informed by governance research that highlights how board behaviours shape risk oversight and the quality of challenge, and how boards can get stuck between oversight and operations when complexity rises.
You will learn three board-ready decision rules that reduce drift and increase confidence. First what decisions belong with the board, what belongs with the CEO, and what belongs with committees. Second, what ‘good enough’ evidence looks like when certainty is impossible. Third, how to disagree well so tension improves thinking rather than slowing action.
You will receive two micro tools designed for real board agendas. The 90-second Decision Test clarifies the decision, ownership and next step. The Pre Mortem surfaces risks early so the board can act before issues become events.
Courage in governance is doing the hard work early so you can name the decision, place it at the right level, decide with what you know, and stand behind the call, even when the path is not clear.
