Karen Bevan is the CEO of Full Stop Australia, Australia's first rape crisis services that is now a national organisation dedicated to ending sexual, domestic and family violence. Karen is a passionate advocate for social justice, with more than 30 years' experience working across NFP organisations, government and research institutions. Her Executive career has spanned large and small NFPs, with a focus on strategy and impact. She has developed and led executive coaching and training programs focussed on building organisational sustainability.
Karen is a past president of the NSW Council of Social Services and Chaired philanthropically funded women's refuge Mary's House and sat of the boards of Youth Law Australia, the Intellectual Disability Rights Service and the Australian Council of Social Service.
Not for profit organisations have long continued to over-perform under prolonged stress and with limited resources. As the costs of ‘doing good’ and make a positive difference continue to rise and the broader strategic context for NFPs gets more complex (and expensive), we are more stretched and under pressure than ever while expectations of capacity to make significant impact in communities rise.
More than ever, being a sustainable organisation is critical. ‘Superhero’ organisations without strong underpinnings are at risk without a clear plan for sustainability. Boards have often focused on financial sustainability, but a truly sustainability is more complex than that. Presenting a model that considers the intersection of financial sustainability, strategic sustainability, internal sustainability and service delivery sustainability, this presentation will explore critical questions and conversations for board and executives to consider so that organisations can build their sustainability in order to keep ‘doing good’ in a way that drives longevity, efficacy and impact while managing risk and supporting their people.
