Good judgement is a core board responsibility. Boards today often make decisions under pressure, with incomplete information and competing views in the room. So how do you know whether your board’s decisions will hold up when someone examines them later?

Drawing on two decades as a workplace health and safety regulator and her experience as a Chair and non-executive director, Janet will discuss the characteristics of good judgement, and what separates it from a process that looks tidy on paper but falls apart under external scrutiny.

In this session, Janet will:

• unpack what good judgement looks like in practice;
• explore examples of decisions that hold up, and ones that don’t;
• explain what a regulator looks for when a decision is tested later; and
• share methods for designing better decision-making conversations in the boardroom.

About the Presenter

Janet Attwood is a former WHS regulator, now a board governance adviser and Chair who specialises in the governance of health, safety and wellbeing. Janet's regulatory career spanned two decades across agencies including SafeWork NSW, NSW Fair Trading and the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency, where she was a State Inspector and held senior leadership roles across policy, strategy, capability building, compliance, enforcement and regulatory reform programs. Coupled with her experience as a Chair and non-executive Director across the NFP and Government sectors, Janet now uses her knowledge to help organisations understand what 'good judgement' looks like, the importance of 'right-sized' governance frameworks and how to use them to make decisions that stand up to scrutiny. Janet helps leaders filter noise and connect the dots across issues, so boards see the full picture early and understand how decisions are likely to be viewed and tested. She is the author of the Amazon.com.au best seller 'Purpose Under Pressure: The Governance Conversations Boards Need Now', and shares her governance, risk and leadership expertise with audiences in workshops, conferences, advisory work and through 'The Governance Slayer' podcast and Substack. Janet brings a calm, practical approach to every board she works with, helping strengthen governance design and board capability so good judgement becomes the working culture of the boardroom itself.
