Better Boards is pleased to present Practice, Not Just Policy: Building Board-Level Cyber Judgement with Jason Wilk, Managing Director of Wilk Advisory.
Board-level cyber crisis exercises are becoming a mark of a well-prepared board, and the logic behind them is one every director already recognises. In sport, the outcome on game day is mostly decided by the work done at training. Cyber governance follows the same pattern. Around half of Australian boards have never run a cyber simulation, which leaves a real opportunity: boards that rehearse build the judgement to use their plans when a real incident hits.
Drawing on several years of designing and facilitating board-level cyber crisis exercises, Jason looks at what strong rehearsal builds, including the instinct to reach for the business continuity plan and checklists under pressure rather than improvise, even when a good plan already exists. A live scenario example, including an AI-driven deepfake impersonation case, keeps the discussion concrete. The session closes with a practical question: what does a board take back to start strengthening its own cyber governance?
In this session Jason will:
- Explore why rehearsal, more than documentation, builds board-level cyber judgement;
- Share what boards that test regularly do differently when the pressure is real;
- Walk through a live scenario, including an AI-driven deepfake impersonation case;
- Outline practical ways to build a testing habit at board level without a big budget; and
- Examine how regulatory expectations already push some sectors harder (critical infrastructure, financial services, aged care and disability services) and what that signals for every other board.
